Free Book Friday: Enter to Win Signed Copy of Lindsey Leavitt's Princess for Hire

Happy Friday y'all.

I'm at a writing retreat and my internet connection is spotty, so this will be a quick post.

Up for grabs today is an autographed copy of Lindsey Leavitt's Princess for Hire.

Lindsey Leavitt is a classy chick, and funny and down to earth and just plain cool. Her agent rocks too.  This is us at her signing.

The question you have to answer is this:

What do you think the next big trend in YA books will be? What would you like to see more of?

Leave a comment with an answer, and you'll be entered to win! (Any thoughts on the subject will be accepted. As my long-time blog readers can tell you, I'm not picky when it comes to contest entries.)

p.s. There are two winners from the WIFYR who should be getting free books from me. You know who you are. Can you email me your addresses again? My has exploded since that contest.  brosam (at) gmail (dot) com

  1. I definitely think that angels and fallen angels are the next big trend in YA. Fallen and Hush, Hush started the movement, and I've heard of several upcoming angel-fics. :-)

  2. The next movement in YA fiction will be a book called "The Underneath".

A writing retreat? I am so jealous I almost hate you a little bit right now. If you tell me it is sunny and you are near water you better sleep with one eye open.

  3. I'm so jealous you're at a writer's retreat! Especially with a spotty internet connection: less temptation to surf the web instead of write! Are you on WIP 3 or revising WIP 2?

As I learned from Aprilynn Pike at LDSSM, Angels are big right now and, partially due to a comment Stephenie Meyer made about planning to write a mermaid book, mermaids are the new up-and-coming trend.

Personally, I'm not picky. Like Aprilynn, if there's fantasy and kissing, I'll read it. :) Especially if Brodi Ashton wrote it. I read a couple pages of hers once and can't wait to read the rest. (I'm hoping if I keep begging, eventually you'll post the whole first chapter. Or how about Free First Chapter Friday?)

  4. The internet seems to be working great on the third floor--you could come up. :)

I think fallen angels are big, but I think other paranormals like selkies and stuff are going to be getting a lot of attention soon too.

  5. Yep. Our internet is working just fine! Come join the writing party!

So as for trends, I think the strong romance trend is going to keep up. YA is about finding yourself, and that includes those crazy hormones and first love, which is something you never forget. Woot!

  6. I think we'll see more mythical creatures. Mermaids, specifically

  7. Next big trend in YA -- lumberjacks.

  8. I would love to see less of the vampires/fantasy/out of this world trend. Back to reality. Real people, going to school, "normal" things, and how they survive it.
But then again, what I want won't happen.

  9. Next trend should be difficult problems faced by MCs. A return to the titles like Ordinary People.

  10. I think the dystopia will be the next big trend in YA..books like the Hunger Games,Candor have already created such a roar! And I love the genre!
I would love to win Princess For Hire...am so stalking it for so many days :)

  11. I think more unique fantasy and angels are definitely hot right now.

I sure wish i could have come to the retreat, I hope you're having a fun and successful time. ;-) Maybe next time...

  12. Paranormal wise there are a lot of new books coming out about angels and such. I think that demons might come into the mix soon, too, though. With all of the angel talk, you've got to have an antagonist, and who better to play that role than demons?

As for reality-based fiction, I've been seeing a lot of GBLT characters come into novels, and I'm thinking we might see even more of that in the near future.

Oh, and I hope this contest is open to Canadians. You didn't say...

  13. I concur with most of what everyone else has said. Angels seem really big right now. A few of the books have have them and I really like reading about them.

Honestly, though, I just like YA fantasy. I think it's fun and as long as it has romantic elements to it, then I'm pretty happy with it.

Have fun at your writing retreat. I get to go to a girls camp kickoff tonight with mostly 12 - 14 year old girls. O_o

  14. Yes, angels seem to be on the rise. I'm curious to see if the mermaid thing takes off. Have fun on your retreat!

  15. I agree with Tiger. Fallen angels or guardian angels would be fabulous!!! The books ""Heavenly" by Jennifer Laurens and ""Hush Hush" by Becca Fitzpatrick started a frenzy that I can't get enough of. Granted I'm game for almost anything as long as its a fabulous story :)

  16. I think paranormal romance will be leading the YA pack for a while. I think we will see a lot more fallen angels. I hope we see some mermaids!

  17. I think Fey is coming into its own with YA. But angels are also coming on strong.

  18. Gods and goddesses. Not necessarily mythology, just like, "Whoa, the god of love just enrolled at my high school. He is, like, the DEFINITION of hot."

    ReplyDelete
  19. I echo what a bunch of people have said about angels, that is definitely where things are heading.

But also, I think we'll be seeing some new stories out involving ghosts, perhaps? Or maybe I just think that'd be cool. :)

  20. Oooh, thanks for the great contest ! I'm honestly thinking that there is something going on with Fallen Angels/Angel people. And maybe Faeries/Fairies as well. There just seem to be a lot more sci fi & fantasy books out there! And I'm glad to see it become more popular !

  22. A couple of nights away, 'writing.' Sounds fun. I think I am busy tonight. With 2 crazy boys. And lots of cleaning to do. Oh well.

  23. I think we're stuck with all things paranormal for a while.

I do think that manga/graphic novels are on the rise.

  24. Fairies or angels I think happier not so dark an gloomy may come in soon

  26. I think we'll see a big upswing in religious fiction, and not just Christian, either. Maybe some Islam and Judaism, too, but lots of New Age tie-ins.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I've heard great things about this book. My girls would love it!

As far as YA trends, I hope they move away from the dark and gloomy trend. Like others, I've been hearing rumors of mermaids.

    ReplyDelete
  28. The next movement in YA fiction will be about strong but vulnerable female characters who allow themselves to embrace how the world sees them. Even in their worst times they will become the GODDESS that they are.
    ....Enjoy your retreat.

  29. I would love to see a trend towards strong female characters with maybe some mystery thrown in. Maybe a modern day Nancy Drew:)
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  30. If the people who buy books ever give up on vampires, I'm thinking that some other sort of supernatural entity/mythical beasts will be the next big thing. Maybe werewolves, maybe dragons (please let it be dragons...I like dragons). Or maybe gnomes...like the ones that people have in their gardens or the one who shills for Travelocity...maybe a big battle between the gnomes who have stayed true to their garden habitats and those who have sold out and grabbed the bucks as spokescreatures for gianourmous conglomerates.
Or is that too much to hope for?

  31. I think it'll be books with food in the title. Like It's Raining Cupcakes :)
