How my Blog Dressed to Match my Cover, and Some Other Covers I Love.

Hey y'all!

Do you notice anything different around here?

No, I haven't lost weight. But thank you.

It's my blog! After the big Cover Reveal last Friday, I received a lot of suggestions that I should dress to match my book:

Since there's no way I could rock that dress, or even squeeze into that dress, I decided to dress up my blog to match. What do you think?

Also, I have to give a big shout out to the world wide web for all of their support over the cover. And let me tell you, that cover took a lot of work. First, I had to find the girl. Then, I had to shop at JC Penny for the dress. Then - this was the hardest part - I had to search the world for some smoke/cloud/fog action...
Okay, I had nothing to do with the cover. Huge thanks for the cover team at HarperCollins. Did you know there are graphic design guys that specialize in smoke?

Anyway, since I've sort of been cover-obsessed this past week, I'd love to share with you some of my favorite covers of recent and upcoming books:

First up, IMAGINARY GIRLS by Nova Ren Suma:
I think Nova should totally dress to match.
It's so darn lovely. And mysterious.

Next up, and keeping with the water theme, THE UNBECOMING OF MARA DYER by Michelle Hodkin.
Some guys are hot enough that you wouldn't mind being pulled under with them.
Seriously, I don't know what it is about underwater shots, but they are so awesome!

And, now, we have an upcoming book, INCARNATE by Jodi Meadows:
Um... you have something on your face... near your eyes...
I think this cover is so different than anything I've seen lately! I love the colors, and I have to know why her eyes have wings!!

And, in keeping with the "winged creatures on the face" theme, here is another one I love, LUMINOUS, by Dawn Metcalf:
It says something good about a person when butterflies love her.
Oh, man. So so pretty!

This is why I love hardcover books so much. They are works of art! So, what are some covers you love?

Also, a reminder that if you'd like a chance to win an arc of EVERNEATH, stop by CranberryFries and Windy's blogs. All you have to do is assemble the right phrase to tweet. It's sort of like a treasure hunt, and who doesn't love a treasure hunt?

  3. Your cover, of course, is top of my list of covers I love. I also love the cover of Hush Hush, A Curse as Dark as Gold, Princess of the Midnight Ball, and--while I don't love it in an oh-so-pretty sort of way--I read Skulduggery Pleasant based solely on the cover.

  8. The new blog look looks great. I love the pop of red at the top just like the pop of red on your cover. :)

  9. I love the Everneath cover! The dress (the style, colour), smoke, font. Gorgeous! Also the covers for the House of Comarré series, Carrier of the mark, Die for Me, the German covers for Julie Kagawa's Iron Fey series, Shattered Souls and so many more.

  10. Jenni- Thanks!

Safari Poet- I should've added that Shattered Souls cover. Those are all so pretty too!

  11. Brodi, I love YOUR cover and I'm so happy you love mine! I haven't dressed up like my cover yet, but you know who did? My mom. At my Books of Wonder signing the week the book came out. She surprised me with her "Imaginary Girls outfit," as she called it. She even bought a red ribbon to tie around her waist!

  12. Nova- That is an awesome story about your mom! I think my mom and her friend are going to try to do the same thing with my cover's dress. The sad thing is, my mom could totally rock that look!

  13. Just so you know, I fully plan on winning that ARC of EVERNEATH so I can spread the love of your book far and wide.

Your cover was the topic of conversation at dinner after the Ally Carter signing in Provo. Everyone had wonderful things to say about it. I'm sure it was a relief to get a cover you love so much. After all the blood, sweat and tears that goes into getting a published novel it would be tragic to have a cover you hated.

I tend to like covers with less photography, more interesting design and typography like SISTERS RED or BEAUTIFUL DARKNESS.

I like the deep, pomegranate red! It looks good on you (and your blog). I hope there are pomegranates in your book.

  14. Oh my WOW! I love your cover! Stunning!

  15. Rachel- I will let the contest runners know that you plan to win! It's funny you mention pomegranates, because at one point HC was talking about doing a pomegranate on the front. So when they sent me the first draft of the cover, I was totally expecting a pomegranate!

Suzanne- Thanks so much! Yours is breathtaking as well. So is your book trailer.

  16. Love the cover, love the changes to the blog. Red is my fave! It was the color of my prom dress and the bridesmaids dresses for my wedding... prom dress was kind of slinky though, not sure I could still pull it off today :(

Unearthly by Cynthia Hand, Fallen by Lauren Kate, and Spells by Aprilynne Pike also have great covers. Your choices are fab.

  17. I decided to answer your question about other covers I like. I had to think about it. :)

I really like the covers for Heist Society and Uncommon Criminals. I like them because of the girl on the cover. She kind of reminds me of Rachel Leigh Cook. But, I like them mostly because I love how the "heist" in the book is shown in the girl's sunglasses.

  18. Your cover is even more striking than I remembered. And I love what you've done with the place!

  19. 6deans- Thanks!

Gina- Unfortunately, there was never a time in my life I could pull off a slinky red dress! I love those covers you mentioned as well, especially Wings. So cool.

Jenny- That really is a cool thing they did with the sunglasses.

Donna- Thanks so much! Come on in, have a look around.

  22. Love the new look. I changed up the look of my blog but the only thing I'm matching is maybe my cold attitude? Hmmm.

  23. Your cover rocks and so does the new blog look. I'm so excited for you!

  24. Jenny- I like your blog! Not to cold at all. :)

    Leisha- Thanks, girlfriend.

  25. Both "Shattered Souls" and "Luminous" remind me of the horror movie poster, "Perfume".

  26. I love finding pretty books to pet.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Heather- I LOVE that poster. Is it so wrong to love a horror movie poster so much? :)

    Debbie- Purrrrrr...

  33. I am loving the new color scheme for the blog. :) Dressing your blog to match your book cover is perfect!

I love book covers in general. Like you said, they are definite works of art. I love all the example you give. Others that I like....there are so many! Right off the top of my head, I love the PARANORMALCY and SUPERNATURALLY covers. I also love the MATCHED and CROSSED covers. Sooooo pretty. :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Shallee- I know- isn't that Incarnate one so fabulous?

Kristin- Oh yeah! Paranormalcy and Matched are so so beautiful, each in its own way.

  35. I love the cover. I know, you can't judge a book by its cover, right? So I won't judge. I'll just steal that dress from your main character who won't judge me, either. But then I'll need a place to wear it. Book release party?

  36. Getting the right dress usually starts with shopping intelligently. To shop intelligently doesn't mean simply shopping for price. It has to do with being able to tell quality from not, whether in the workmanship of your formal dresses, or in the richness of their fabric.
